Gera, Germany

photo01

In the five years I worked in Gera, I never took many photographs of the town itself. These photos were taken on 16 May 2002 on the grounds of a church a couple of minutes from our school. The black ribbons hanging from the tree commemorate the Erfurt massacre of 26 April 2002, when Robert Steinhäuser shot dead thirteen teachers, two students and a police officer. It was a difficult time for students and teachers alike, as tragedies like Columbine seemed now very real and close: Erfurt is only 100 km from Gera, and 50 from Jena, where I live.
